A Guide to Base Oils

Base oils or carrier oils, are used in all sorts of body-care items.  Whether you are following a recipe, or making your own formulas, you will want to have a sense of the qualities of various carrier oils.

Apricot Kernel Oil – Medium weight oil, easily absorbed by the skin.  Good for sensitive or prematurely-aged skin.

Avocado Oil – thick, heavy, easily absorbed. Can be used by all skin types, especially dry skin, and by those who suffer from eczema. Soothes and softens dehydrated skin. Revitalizes and regenerates mature skin. Dark green oil from the avocado fruit. Contains vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids.

Castor Oil – Very thick, shiny oil. Can be used on all skin types. Acts as a barrier. Protects skin from harsh environmental conditions. Very soothing. Pale, unscented oil made from the seeds of the castor plant. One of the few oils that is soluble in alcohol.

Coconut Oil – Solid below 76 degrees F.  Emollient.  Soothes sensitive or irritated skin.

Grapeseed Oil – very light and non-greasy, easily absorbed. Can be used by all skin types. Slightly astringent. Colorless and odorless, made from pressed seeds. Contains vitamins and minerals.

Hazelnut Oil – light, easily absorbed.  Slightly astringent.

Jojoba Oil – thick, light, easily absorbed. It is similar to our own skin oils. Richly moisturizing for all skin types. Thickens and beautifies hair. Useful in reducing inflammation and treating acne. Contains proteins and a waxy substance that is similar to collagen. Technically a liquid wax, not an oil.

Olive Oil – thick, slightly sticky, easily absorbed.    Soothes and moisturizes dry, dehydrated skin. Soothing to sore, achy muscles and joints. Thickens and beautifies hair. Pale yellow to dark green. Contains protein, minerals, and vitamins.

Sesame Oil – Good for all skin types. Can be used to treat arthritis, psoriasis, and eczema. Dark yellow. Rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Sweet Almond Oil – Easily absorbed, has a good “slip.” Good for all skin types. Softens and soothes the skin. Helps relieve dry itchy skin & can help reduce inflammation. Heals rough skin, strengthens nails. Pale yellow oil from the nut kernel. Rich in protein.
