Traditionally used as a ceremonial beverage on many Pacific Islands. Often drunk at the beginning of important meetings, it helps people to feel more cooperative. It is used as a mild sedative with relaxant properties and for nervousness, tension, cramping. Pulverize or powder the root to make a milky drink, or use the cut root added to make a decoction (simmered tea). It makes a fine evening drink.
Not to be used while pregnant or nursing. Not to be used by those with a pre-existing liver condition. Excessive consumption may impair ability to drive.
