Native to the Rocky Mountains, Osha root is a traditional Native American treatment for indigestion and upper respiratory infections and is considered a “Bear Medicine.”
Osha is one of the herbs in the traditional smoking mixture, Kinnick.
Many people, including me, carry a piece in their Medicine Pouches for protection from physical illness and spiritual illness.
It can be made into tea, tincture or ground for encapsulation.
Like its Chinese cousin Ligusticum, Osha will induce sweating, thought to prevent the development of a full-blown cold or flu. Osha is also used to help coughs become productive.
