The Heretic’s Book of Prayer

$15.00

The Heretic’s Book of Prayer is the third volume of poetry from Elizabeth Weaver-Kreider.  In it, we follow the Mysteries of the Rosary: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious.

At the beginning, the winsome Fool sets out on a journey, eager for adventure. The tone changes as she faces accusation and inquisition, losing the thread of her own story. In the last third of the book, she sets off again, this time determined to live on her own terms, choosing the identity of heretic rather than clipping her wings to fit into patriarchal and religious institutional boxes.

These poems are full of reverence and rage, trauma and hope, resilience and fierce love.

The author writes, “You have to take hold of your own story, sometimes wrestling it and wrangling it away from malicious and even well-meaning folks who want to tell it in their way. How easy it is to get lost in the threads of shaming and rage and sanctuary of someone else’s telling.”

She is a poet and a teacher, a heretic and a witch, full of reverence and wonder, full of rage and desire. She longs to live in a world where everyone is encouraged to live freely and with joy, without fear of judgement or censure from religious or political or social institutions. Elizabeth lives today in the river hills of the lower Susquehanna River in York County, Pennsylvania.
