Yemaya is Orisha of the Ocean and Protectress of the enslaved Yoruba people during the middle passage.
Her seven skirts represent the seven seas.
Originally known as the Orisha of rivers, when Yemayah was brought to the New World by the peoples of Nigeria via Brazil and Cuba, she carried them across the ocean, so in the Caribbean and especially in Brazil, she became associated with the ocean. She has been venerated for centuries on both sides of the Atlantic.
