Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum) grows in the Rocky Mountains of New Mexico And Colorado.
Its smoke is widely used to cleanse a space, and drive out harmful spirits. In ceremonies, the plant serves to dispel negative forces from the environment. For these reasons the incense of Juniper may be considered a banishing smoke.
When a patient was celebrating the recovery of a long illness, the medicine man and his assistants would make gestures of “throwing the disease away.”
Another use of juniper smoke is when connecting and working with ancestors.
